
Author Christine Purkis was amazed upon first seeing PontcysyllteAqueduct and decided to learn more about its history and designer. Constructed from 1795 to 1805, it was an incrediblefeat of engineering at the time and is now a World Heritage Site and one ofWales’ most celebrated landmarks, visited by around half a million people ayear. The mostambitious part of the project was PontcysyllteAqueduct, a 307m stone and cast-iron bridge carrying the canal 38m above theRiver Dee in Llangollen. In 1793 Telford wasappointed to design and construct the Ellesmere Canal to link the ironworks andcollieries of Wrexham with Chester. At the same time, herlong-lost brother Joe has worked his way up to help oversee the construction ofPontcysyllte Aqueduct under engineer Thomas Telford. Peggin, abandoned by her family, must try to carve a new life as a housemaid.

Betrayal follows thestory of a brother and sister from an impoverished background in 18 thcentury north Wales.
